Chapter 6

John watched Dean leave the room and let out a long sigh. That boy was going to be the death of him, he just knew it. Not a moment later, his cell phone rang. John pulled out the peculiar object and stared down at the familiar number glaring back at him.

He flipped it open. “Hello, Dragan,” he said with reluctance. Dragan Brooks was the last person he wanted to talk to right now, but he knew like any good father that he would be curious about what had just happened.

“Did he buy it? Did my son believe what you told him about the shifter going crazy?”

John sighed. “Yeah, he bought it. I still don’t see why you just don’t tell him the truth. The kid should be able to make up his own mind.”

Dragan laughed into the speaker. “It is still Dean’s decision. I just gave him a little push in the right direction. After Corbin, he was a wreck. I’d hate to see him throw away true love because of that backstabbing mongrel. My son deserves the best, and I happen to know Malachi is just that.”

John snorted. “I never thought I’d ever see the day when you were trying to hook your son up with a shifter. You used to hunt them in your free time, remember? When did the times change?”

“John, that was centuries ago, before I realized there was more to life than hate and violence. I don’t want to see my son go down that same path. We have a chance here to unite the humans and shifters. The Fates have told me what could happen if Dean takes the road destiny has mapped out for him. I’m talking peace for all nations, for all species. I won’t let him throw that all away because of that little blip in the road. I wish he’d never met Corbin. He wouldn’t even have any hesitations if it hadn’t been for him.”

John supposed he was right. There were bigger fish and all. Still, he didn’t like manipulating and lying to Dean. “Why don’t we just tell Dean? He deserves to know who you really are and what he really is. He could handle it, Dragan. He would make the right decision, if not for himself, then for his people, for all of them. Besides, it’s not like he’s never going to find out. He will be turning thirty in a few more years.”

There was a long pause on the other end. “I just want him to be happy, brother. I never wanted him involved in all this mess, and I curse the Fates for what they’ve done to us each and every day. It’s best if he doesn’t know about this, about what we’ve done. It’ll only make him resist his and Malachi’s chemistry more. They belong together, and if telling a little half truth will help free him of this curse then so be it.”

“But we’re still lying to him. Shifters don’t go crazy if they’re rejected by their mate.
